    Hollywood Costume Designer, Marilyn Vance, was responsible for the iconic red dress worn by Julia Roberts in the feature film; “Pretty Woman”.

    We sat down with Marilyn and discussed the process she went through to select a dress design to create, along with the actual companies that it took to source all of the fabric and materials that went into making the dress.

    Let’s start with the actual material. The material used was crushed velvet died to a gorgeous red.

    ed velvet material, specifically the fabric, is created using a specialized weaving process, similar to other types of velvet, but with a specific focus on the red color. The fabric is woven on a unique loom that creates two layers simultaneously, which are then separated to form the characteristic pile. After weaving, the fabric is dyed, brushed, and treated to enhance its softness and luster. 

    Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

    1. Weaving:

    • Velvet is woven on a special loom that weaves two layers of fabric simultaneously, with an extra warp yarn woven over rods or wires to create the pile.
    • The two layers are connected by these warp threads, which are then cut apart to create the fabric’s pile.
    • The resulting fabric has a plush, raised texture on one side due to the pile. 

    2. Dyeing:

    • Once the fabric is woven, it’s dyed to achieve the vibrant red color characteristic of red velvet. 
    • Various red dyes can be used, with options ranging from natural sources like madder or cochineal to synthetic dyes. 
    • The choice of dye will impact the shade and depth of the red color. 

    3. Finishing:

    It may also be treated with other finishing techniques to improve its drape, hand, and durability. 

    After dyeing, the fabric is brushed to enhance its softness and luster.
